HISTORY OF THE MINI |
The
birth of the "Mini" in 848cc form was due to the technical genius of a
man called Alec Issigonis. The design criteria laid before Issigonis
was simple - design a four seater car using available engines and make
it as small and economical as possible. When he had finished this small
transverse-engine front wheel drive car it took the motoring world by
storm.
The Mini quickly became a classless car bought by Joe Public - from
Midwives to Megastars of the 60's & 70's - "Lennon & McCartney" from the
Beatles, "David Bowie", members of the "Rolling Stones" - the car was
even given the Royal "seal of approval" when the Queen went for a ride
in Windsor Park with Alec Issigonis.
It wasn't just on the road that the mini was winning it was just as
effective on the track and through the forests where the Mini Cooper
derivative won countless races and rallies, including being King at
Monte Carlo for two years running. The Mini is still winning in
competition today and what of the new Mini - might we see this new Mini
battling with Subaru's, Mitsubishis and Fords. After celebrating its
40th birthday it shows this mega little car has still got lots of rubber
left on its boots yet. |
